Billy's Family Crest Business
Making a Wooden Box

Got a chance to see how Billy makes his wooden boxes for his special decanter and glass sets which started out with selecting the Aspin wood...

On the way to the wood place Billy first stopped to cut some brass plaques for his door plates and then it was off to select the wood.

Billy was looking for straight wood as quite a lot has a sigifivant curve in it so he had to be careful. He was also looking for planks that did not have many knots as that would be wasted wood.

And it's back to the workshop to make boxes

The first step is to put the planks through the planer to smooth the wood and get it down to the correct thickness for the box

Then Billy cuts up the planks to the appropriate size for making the box

Time for the router to put the edges on the individual pieces of wood that will make the box

Billy always checks each piece to see what side would be best for the outside of the box

And now it's on to the sanding phase

Billy has to check the sander is aligned correctly

And now all is ok the sanding process begins

Billy always eyeballs each piece to ensure it's up to standard

It's now onto the band saw where the grooved as added which will take the insert

Now we're ready to start building the box

Billy first adds the glue

And then starts to assemble the box

And the basic box is now complete

Billy now sands the box and this process also take off any surplus glue

And in case you wondered what Debbie was up to... well she is working on an order of 250 baseball caps which will take around 15 hours machine time to complete

Billy now covers the nail holes with putty

Now the putty is dry it's back to sanding to take off any excess and discguise the work

And again adjusting the sander with the new sanding belt in position to do the fine work

Billy always eyeballs each piece to ensure it is up to standard. The piece of wood on the right is to show what has to be discarded when selecting the best pieces of wood for the box

It's now off to cut the wood for the base of the box

Billy now fixes the base to the box

Billy always checks the box at every stage of the process

Now he puts on the glue that will hold the veneer but he has to wait 45 minuted for this to dry to give a permanent bond

Once the veneer is on it has to be routered to make it smooth with the box

And again a sanding finish

At this point I ran out of film but borrowed these last pictures from a previous story board to show how the box is completed. The final picture is Billy splitting the box into it's two halves.

And if you'd like to see how this goes on to become the full decanter and four whisky glass set then check out the other storyboard.
